Rub-A-Dub-Dub: ‘Arizona Shower’ Is Refreshing But Not Cleansing

Arizona Republic:

Since our backyard pool water is now as warm as bathwater, my husband has taken to going for a dip in the pool instead of showering. No soap is used, of course. Is he clean? Also, he has never used anything other than soap and his hand to shower. Shouldn’t he use something like a washcloth?

Jumping in the pool instead of the tub is known as “an Arizona shower.” However, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good idea.

You know those signs you see at public pools telling you to shower before getting in the pool? That’s because they don’t want your old dead skin cells and loose hairs and stuff like that in the pool. Although I guess you don’t need to worry much about that in your own pool.

And do you know why you’re supposed to take a shower after you’ve been in the pool? Because chlorine levels in swimming pools are about three or four times higher than in tap water.

Too much chlorine can make your skin all itchy and dry and make your hair kind of brittle. So it’s a good idea to rinse some of that chlorine off your skin and out of your hair.

And if he isn’t using soap, he really isn’t getting clean, is he?
