Journals.aol.com:

Having boys and the things I get to look forward to.

No offense to the male readers, but, being a woman who has always showered, regularly and put on fresh clothes, I can’t seem to understand my sons aversions to cleanliness. Don’t they start to itch? Can’t they smell themselves? Why don’t they care?

As a mother I have my work cut out for me. Never mind teaching them good manners. Or how to walk safely across the street. Teaching good hygiene to two boys destined for dirtiness has become my biggest challenge.

Without naming names to avoid potential embarrassment (I say potential because I don’t think they would care) I’ll just call them Smelly 1 and Smelly 2.

I get a good look at Smelly 1’s hair while standing in line at the brightly lit department store. I want to know: Did you brush it today? Do you bother to use shampoo when you shower or do you just rinse it with water? He replies with a tight-lipped smirk – trying to hide what I (unfairly) suspect are his un-brushed teeth. That night, Smelly 1 takes a shower and uses the shampoo I bought especially for him. Maybe, I think, if I include him in the purchase of items like soap and toothpaste, he might actually use them.
