
You know how it happens. You are in the shower belting out your favourite song through the steam and unsure of the words, so you make up the lyrics as you go along.
Hence The Police’s hit “So Lonely” will be forever “Sue Lawley” and “Only the Lonely” by Roy Orbison morphs into “Only Baloney”.
The twisting of lyrics is as old as singing itself and has become a source of fascination and frustration to music lovers and amateur songsmiths throughout the years.
There is even a word for this verbal form of malapropism: a Mondegreen.
But now any confusion is about to be cleared up, thanks to the internet. Under a deal between leading US publishers and Yahoo.com, hundreds of thousands of authorised music lyrics will be available for the first time on a website for free.
