Evansville Courier & Press:

In an average lifetime our feet carry us three times around the world. In return, we reward them by stuffing them into shoes where no self-respecting feet should find themselves and abuse them in a number of other ways. The impact of that lack of care really hits home later in life when we become seniors. Three-fourths of seniors have serious foot problems that require treatment.

Foot problems result from a combination of a lifetime of abuse and the normal aging processes. As we get older, our feet tend to spread out and get longer.

The bottoms of our feet — especially the heels — lose some of the fat that cushions us. The skin becomes thinner, less elastic and more prone to infection. The foot’s ligaments and tendons lose some of their ability to stretch, and the toenails get thick and brittle. Changes in the shape of the foot, such as bunions and hammertoes, are also more common among seniors.

These changes lead to discomfort, but it’s not just comfort that’s at stake here. Read more.
