For 35 years, Judy Timmons has considered herself a conservationist. It is a passion adopted from her parents, who grew up during the Great Depression.

“They sort of passed along that depression mentality to me that you save things–you don’t waste them,” explained Timmons.

For Timmons, it did not take a drought or a formal request from state officials to keep her from wasting water. In 1979, she installed water-saving showerheads in her Richland County home. “You still feel as though you’re getting a forceful shower, but you’re not using as much water,” she said. “The water is forced through a small opening.” Timmons’ faucets are equipped with similar devices.

While waiting for tap water to warm, Timmons fills empty cartons with the cold water. “It takes about a gallon of water before I get hot water,” explained Timmons, who uses the stored water on her potted plants. “I use a lot less water this way.” More.
